Why Your Tummy Rumbles During a Massage (and Why It’s Totally Normal!)
Hello friends,
This crops up almost daily in the treatment room so I just had to address it…
The rumble in your tummy: A massage mystery unveiled!
Have you ever found yourself lying on the massage couch, completely relaxed, only to be interrupted by the unexpected growl of your stomach? Don’t worry, you’re not alone, and it’s nothing to be embarrassed about!
What’s That Sound?
That rumbling noise you hear is called “borborygmi” (fun word, right?). It’s simply the sound of gas and fluids moving through your intestines. When you’re relaxed during a massage, your digestive system is too! It’s simply your body’s way of saying, “Hey there, I’m feeling pretty relaxed right now!” It’s like a gentle applause from your digestive system, applauding the wonderful work being done (I have been told many times that I have magic hands) to ease tension and promote circulation throughout your body.
It’s a natural response and a sign that your body is in deep relaxation.
Why Does It Happen?
Allow me to explain the ins and outs of why your tummy might be talking during your massage:
Relaxation Mode
Massages activate the parasympathetic nervous system, which promotes digestion. This system is often referred to as “rest and digest for a reason!
Blood Flow Boost
Increased blood flow to your digestive organs during a massage can stimulate activity, leading to those familiar sounds.
Empty Stomach
If your stomach is empty, it might be more vocal. Those growls are just your stomach reminding you it’s ready for some food. You will no doubt hear mine going at some point during your treatment too (massage is hungry work you know!).
It’s a Good Thing!
A rumbling tummy is actually a sign that your body is responding well to the massage. It means you’re relaxed, and your body is functioning as it should.
No Need to Feel Embarrassed
Trust me, I’ve been in this game a long time and have heard it all before! Your body’s natural responses are a testament to your comfort and the effectiveness of the massage. So, next time your stomach joins in the relaxation symphony, smile and enjoy the moment, no need to even acknowledge it.
Remember, a little tummy talk is just another way your body says, “Ahhh, this feels great!”
I hope that has put your mind at rest as I want you to feel as comfortable as you can possibly be every time you step foot through my treatment room door.
Stay relaxed and rumble on,
Jo x
